Chapter 6 - The working girl!
Well, well... I´m now a working girl... and no, not the kind that you´re thinking. To be honest, I´m finding this job quite challenging and frustrating given I can´t speak the language... just a minor detail!! Kids come up to me... say something in icelandic... I give a sympathetic smile... tell them I can only speak english... they look at me blankly... then repeat what they have just said... then I repeat what I said... then they walk off with a confused look on their face. These are truly special moments... I have shared many beautiful touching moments like this with the children... It leaves me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that “I´m making a difference!”
Mmmm, not too sure why they hired me to work with the kids when they were aware that I can´t speak icelandic?!? I guess they were so impressed with my wealth of skills, knowledge, experience, talents and obviously my lovely personality, wit and charm... they just couldn´t say no.
So anyway after day one... which left me feeling more like part of the furniture... I decided I should learn some useful icelandic words to help me communicate with the kids. Birna kindly helped me learn words like... milk, bread, water, sit down, come, stop, very good, slowly, quickly, play nice, and clean up. I´m still learning the ´you little bastards´ bit to add on the end... No just kidding... the kids are actually quite well behaved... They have even taught me to count from one to ten in icelandic (yes you would be forgiven for thinking I was the 6 year old!)
